National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum-A Look Inside the Western Heritage of Oklahoma
The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum memorializes the cowboy traditions of Oklahoma. Located in Oklahoma City, the museum offers an expansive array of both Western as well as American Indian artifacts and works of art. The museum was originally established in 1955 and since that time has expanded to include a variety of different exhibits covering some 200,000 square feet. Along with more than 2,000 works of art, there are also numerous displays that are meant to educate visitors about many of the everyday objects that were an important part of settling the West.
One of the most popular galleries in the museum is the Gallery of Fine American Firearms, which houses a variety of different firearms produced by companies such as Colt, Remington, Sharps and more. A replica of an authentic prairie town is also on display at the museum, providing guests with an intimate look at the way those who settled the west lived during the latter part of the 19th century. Each year during the holiday season, the exhibit is turned into a living history museum with the addition of historical figures portrayed by period actors.
