Renee Cassar, Tennis Prodigy Turned Music Pro
According to her Myspace page, Renee Cassar lives by the motto “No Music, No Life.” You would think that the person who embraced such a passionate mantra would have been pursuing music since they were in diapers, wouldn’t you?
Not so for Aussie Artist Renee Cassar. As a matter of fact, she pursued another passion as a child - tennis. Renee was a competitive tennis player throughout her formative years and was highly encouraged to make athletics her focus, to the exclusion of all other dreams and interests.
However, when she was in high school, everything in her life changed. I think that she, her fans, and the entire musical community would affirm the change was for the better.
Renee was studying theater at school, and so of course she wanted to be on stage as part of the play that her school was putting on that year. The one problem? It was Fame, which was a musical, and singing was something Renee had never even tried! Still, the audition piece was “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and so she gave it her best try. Imagine her surprise when she was cast in the lead role of Carmen!
She did, in fact, take some singing lessons before opening night rolled around in order to prepare, she was still very green when she made her first appearance in front of an audience. To make matters worse, she had lost her voice due to all that intensive preparation! Nevertheless, she studied up on voice remedies and stowed some backstage, and she forged on and sang the role. And she’s never regretted it.
