Virtually all men will run into prostate of some sort as they get older with problems frequently beginning at about the age of 50. By the age of 60 roughly 50% of men will be affected and by the age of 80 nine out of every ten men will be experiencing some enlarged prostate symptoms.

In many cases prostate symptoms will be quite mild and, because at this time in life most of us are beginning to experience a range of medical problems, we tend to simply put our prostate symptoms down to nothing more than part of the normal process of ageing. In many cases this is fine since the majority of prostate problems are not serious and, providing the symptoms don’t worry you too much you can live with them quite happily and they won’t do you any real harm.

Unhappily however in all too many cases prostate cancer is present and if this is ignored it will eventually spread and probably kill you. Indeed, prostate cancer is responsible for the second highest cancer death toll in the the United States today.

There are a range of different symptoms which could point to prostate problems but, as with a lot of things, these symptoms can also be caused by a whole range of other problems. In the majority of cases however if these symptoms do not result from problems with the prostate they will tend to be short lived, being caused perhaps by a simple infection that disappears in a week or so without any need for treatment. If however symptoms appear regularly or pop up and remain with you then it is likely that they are coming from an enlarged prostate gland. Prostate symptoms can include:

1. Difficulty starting to urinate and a need to strain in order to begin urinating.

2. A weak flow of urine.

3. An interrupted flow of urine with a tendency to stop and start.

4. The feeling that your bladder is not empty even when you have just been to the bathroom.

5. The feeling that you have to visit the bathroom urgently together with difficulty in “holding on”.

6. The need for frequent trips to the bathroom and a need to get up in the night.

7. The tendency to dribble urine after you have been to the bathroom.

These prostate symptoms are the body’s alarm signals that problems may be starting to develop and, although in nearly all instances this is not serious and nothing to be concerned about, for all too many men these turn out to be the warning signs of a serious and all too often deadly disease.

The only sure way to discover whether you fall into the former or the latter category is have yourself checked over by your doctor who will do a couple of tests including a simple male prostate exam.
