Life With Skin Disorders Such As Psoriasis
Being afflicted with skin disorders, such as or psoriasis, acne vulgaris, acne rosacea or skin eczema can make it seem like the end of the world. The never ending cycle of outbreaks and treatments can seem overwhelming at times and can cause profound psychological damage that can lead to depression over the way your skin looks. There are also other factors that can come as a result of psoriasis. Psoriatic arthritis is a debilitating form of arthritis similar to rheumatoid arthritis. The joints swell and become inflamed, resulting in pain and suffering.
What causes psoriasis is not yet fully understood. Many dermatologists have come to believe that it could be hereditary. Dermatologists do know that it is not contagious. The psoriasis medication is used to control outbreaks and help alleviate some of the secondary symptoms of the disease. It is important to understand that psoriasis cannot be cured at this point in time. Researchers are struggling to find a cure but as of yet the cure is not within the grasp of scientists and the medical community. Sufferers know that though they may experience a remission of the disease, it will reoccur and only through psoriasis medication and treatment can it be somewhat controlled.
Skin disorders such as psoriasis can cause psychological issues as well. The skin rashes can be huge and the skin disease can cause embarrassment. In an attempt to minimize the staring and the confusion of those not aware of the skin disease, many sufferers will attempt to cover up the area. In summer when other people are wearing less clothing and going to the beach, psoriasis sufferers often find themselves isolated by wearing long sleeved tops and pants, or whatever is necessary to cover the rashes.
Unlike cures for acne and other skin problems, the Psoriasis skin disorder treatment ranges from topical ointments to photochemotherapy. Doctors attempt to begin the skin care of sufferers with creams and ointments before going on to more invasive remedies. For some sufferers the ointments and creams do work but for some it takes a combined attack of ointments, phototherapy and photochemotherapy to rid themselves of the skin lesions and the build up of plaque psoriasis creates on the skin.
Researchers and the medical community are diligently searching for a cure for psoriasis. But until that time this skin disorder will remain on the forefront of the patient’s mind while they deal with the endless cycle of outbreaks and remissions. The medicines can alleviate the symptoms but cannot provide a cure. Skin disorders such as psoriasis can also cause further complications such as psoriatic arthritis. It is rare but it does occur in 5-7% of patients. Hopefully, there will be a cure for this condition soon.
