Vacations In Scotland And A Number Of Interesting Tourist Attractions To Visit Close To Inverness
The Highland city of Inverness, Scotland is situated in some of the most incredible countryside in the UK. The city, and surrounding area, are steeped in history, often these lay witness to an immeasurable amount of suffering and violence. Of course Inverness has a fantastic collection of tourist attractions (and the number is always growing). In the paragraphs below I introduce three tourist attractions in Inverness, Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum & Art Gallery and Beauly Priory:
Beauly Priory
In the Thirteenth century Monks, from the Valliscaulian order, set up a community at Beauly Priory. Unfortunately no-one can the accurate date of the foundation of the settlement but it is widely was roughly around 1230. Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat, was the landowner and patron of Beauly. Sir John Bisset and the French monks are those who named the place Beauly, coming from the French for beautiful place (beau lieu). Unfortunately, the priory was abandoned following the Scottish Reformation and the stone was stolen for the building of other structures in the area. Today Beauly Priory (ruins) are in the care of Historic Scotland having been handed over to the state in 1913.
Inverness Castle
There have been many structures on the site of Inverness Castle through the centuries, some dating as far back as 1057. The first Inverness Castle was attacked by King Robert I of Scotland, and nearly destroyed. The castle which appears today was constructed and designed by William Burn in 1836. The picturesque castle, built of red sandstone, resides atop a cliff looking down over the River Ness and the cathedral on the opposite side. King James I of Scotland conducted parliament at Inverness Castle in the year 1427, and called all the Northern Chieftains to be in attendance. Horrifically three of these chieftains were eventually condemed to death for their support of an independent sovereignty.
